There are many products on the market that claim to aid smokers in kicking the habit. One of those is the nicotine inhaler. In the United States, the nicotine inhaler is only available by prescription.

1. Make an appointment with your family physician to talk about your desire to quit smoking. If you decide on a nicotine inhaler, he may prescribe them for you, and will advise you use it and how many cartridges you should start with.


2. Take the prescription to a pharmacist and have it filled. In some states, stop smoking aids are covered by health insurance; in some states, they are not. Check with the pharmacist to see if it is covered by your particular health insurance. The prices generally range from $40 to $60 per box.


3. Begin the program at the highest level of nicotine your body needs, based upon what you and your doctor have discussed. Be sure to follow the directions on the package and be mindful of your doctor's specific instructions. However, consumers usually begin by using between six to 16 cartridges per day to relieve smoking withdrawal symptoms.


4. Nicotine inhalers are designed to look and feel like a cigarette, so you can mimic the actions of smoking a cigarette, with a smaller dose of nicotine being delivered in each "puff." You "puff" on the mouthpiece of the inhaler just as you would "puff" on a lit cigarette.


5. Reduce your consumption. You should be working yourself toward fewer and fewer cartridges with each passing week until you finally reach 0.
