Nicotine is extracted from tobacco plants to make pesticide.
Just because a pesticide is organic, that doesn't make it safe. Nicotine pesticides made from tobacco leaves are among the most toxic pesticides on the market and carry a "Warning" label, denoting their toxic qualities. The U.S. Department of Environmental Protection has called for their removal from the market, effective January 1, 2014.
Uses
Tobacco-based nicotine pesticides are sold under several brand names and are considered safe for organic use because, while toxic, they break down quickly. Nicotine pesticides are labeled for use on flowering and ornamental trees, flowers and shrubs and some fruits and vegetables.
Insects
Nicotine pesticides are used to control aphids, spider mites, thrips and other insects that suck juices out of leaves. As part of an integrated pest management program, many organic gardeners opt for safer alternatives, such as planting pest-resistant varieties, using less toxic pesticides such as sabadilla and pyrethrin, and encouraging the presence of natural predators, such as frogs, snakes, lady birds and lacewings in their gardens.
Warning
Nicotine pesticides are highly toxic to all warm-blooded mammals and are readily absorbed through skin. In low doses, these pesticides may cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, cramps and vomiting. In larger doses, nicotine pesticide poisoning may cause loss of consciousness and coma.
