Remove Nicotine Residue

Nicotine residue can be removed with cleaning solutions.

Smoking cigarettes indoors may cause household surfaces, clothes and carpets to be covered with nicotine residue. These sticky brown nicotine spots can remain on surfaces for years. Nicotine residue creates foul, lingering odors in a home, even long after a person quits smoking. Fortunately, nicotine residue can be cleaned and removed with certain cleaning solutions. However, do not put off removing the residue; the longer the nicotine residue sets, the more difficult it will be to remove.

Instructions

1. Put on the disposable latex gloves and a face mask. It is not safe to inhale odors from nicotine residue.

2. Pour 1 tbsp. of liquid hand dishwashing detergent into a cleaning bucket. Add 2 cups of cool water to create a soapy solution.

3. Dampen a clean cloth in the soapy solution. Blot the cloth over the nicotine residue until no more nicotine stains remain.

4. Moisten a microfiber towel with warm water. Dab the wet spots with the microfiber towel to rinse out the soapy solution.

5. Allow the surface to air dry. If you notice any remaining nicotine residue, use a clean cloth to blot dry-cleaning solvent onto the residue until the solvent is completely absorbed.
