Alerts For Champix

Champix may help you quit smoking, but there are possible side effects.

The Centers for Disease Control estimated that there were 46 million U.S. smokers in 2009. One in five deaths in the U.S. is due to a smoking related illness. This is one reason that many smokers want to quit the habit. Champix is a drug that is said to aid a person in the quest to give up cigarettes. However, there are some serious side effects that can occur from taking this drug.

Dizziness and Sleepiness

A doctor prescribing Champix to a patient may warn that person not to drive or operate heavy machinery while taking the drug. This is due to the fact that some people experience dizziness and sleepiness when taking Champix.

Contains Varenicline Tartrate

Some people are allergic to varenicline tartrate, the active ingredient in Champix. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or other body parts, itchy skin, and a rash or hives.

Changes in Mood or Behavior

A doctor must be informed of a patient's mental health history as Champix has been reported to cause mood swings. Some people taking Champix have experienced depression, anxiety, and aggression. Additionally, other users reported hallucinations and suicidal thoughts. If you notice any changes in mood or behavior, you must stop notify your doctor and stop taking the medication immediately.

Other Medications

Champix should not be used with other smoking-cessation products such as a nicotine patch or lozenges. Also, a person should not use other medication that is geared toward helping someone quit smoking such as WellButrin or Zyban. Using these products at the same time as Champix reduces the effectiveness of the drug.

Blood Conditions

People who use insulin or blood-thinning medications should be especially cautious when taking Champix. A doctor needs to be informed of any prior medical issues and medication used for these issues as the effectiveness of those medications may be jeopardized by the use of Champix.
