Stop Being Hyper

Stop Being Hyper

An extremely stressful day, three pots of coffee and a pack of cigarettes can make it impossible to relax when you get home from work, but there are ways to unwind and calm yourself down. Stop being hyper, get centered and relax so you can rest.

Instructions

1. Steer clear of stimulants. Stop being hyper by not ingesting things that make you that way. Caffeine and nicotine are the biggest offenders. If you smoke, stop all together. Nicotine is a known stimulant. If you drink caffeine, moderate your intake significantly. Consider all sources of caffeine intake including tea, soda, chocolate, energy drinks and some over the counter medicines.

2. Change your diet. Eat healthy meals rich in protein and complex carbohydrates. Avoid simple carbohydrates and refined sugars, especially late in the evening. Stay away from sugary sweets, white pastas, white breads and white rice. Your body recognizes these as sugar and gets an instant burst of energy.

3. Burn off excess energy. If you feel overly hyper, exercise. Go to the gym, take a walk or go for a bike ride. Put your excess energy to good use, but be careful not to exercise too close to bedtime. Getting your heart pumping temporarily raises your energy level. Do it early in the morning or right when you get home from work to use exercise to calm down.

4. Reduce your distractions. Turn off the loud music and noisy television. Switch off the computer monitor and dim the lights. When turned on, each of these gives your brain added stimulation and makes you more hyper. Dim the lights one hour before bedtime to help your brain release melatonin, the hormone that prepares you for sleep.

5. Use breathing exercises. Stop being hyper and center yourself. Sit in a quiet room and close your eyes. Focus on taking deep, slow breaths. Clear your mind and try not to think about anything at all. Inhale and exhale slowly until you feel your body relax.
