Reduce Alcohol Urges

University of Michigan

Consuming too much alcohol can cause damage to the liver, kidney and brain, yet alcohol addiction is one of the most difficult types of addiction to recover from. Any recovering addict will tell you that the most difficult part of recovery is controlling the cravings. Those who do want to recover can take certain steps to reduce their cravings for alcohol.

Instructions

1. Take vitamin B supplements. Alcohol depletes the body of essential B vitamins, which are responsible for energy creation. Taking supplements will increase your energy and limit cravings for an energy source in alcohol.

2. Reduce sugar intake. Eating foods high in sugar content increases alcohol cravings. Avoid sodas, juice and desserts with more than 10 grams of sugar.

3. Avoid caffeine. Caffeine plays a role in abnormal sugar levels in the body. Because alcohol induces sugar cravings, lowering the amount of caffeine consumption will help reduce cravings.

4. Eat healthy meals. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms include weakness, body aches and insomnia. Eating healthy replenishes the body with essential nutrients to keep energy high and keep you going throughout the day. Without healthy meals, the body aches and is unable to maintain energy. The natural instinct of the body craves its normal source of energy in alcohol.

5. Exercise regularly. Exercise increases mood and eliminates toxins. Plan regular activities to induce endorphin circulation and eliminate depression often found in recovering addicts. The boost in your mood will also keep you motivated to stay in recovery and avoid relapsing.
