Make Fentanyl Patches Remain On

Fentanyl patches are used to treat patients with severe chronic pain. Fentanyl is an opioid that is many times more potent than heroin, so it is typically used only for extreme cases. Some users of the fentanyl patch have trouble getting the patch to stick to the body as well as it should. The basic idea of adding extra adhesives to the patch is simple, but it must be done with caution. If these patches are used incorrectly, it can cause problems such as respiratory depression, or even death.

Instructions

1. Wash the skin with warm water in the spot where you intend to place the patch. Patches don't stick well to dirty skin.

2. Pat the skin dry with a towel. Let the skin air dry an additional 10 minutes to ensure it is entirely dry.

3. Remove the cover for the adhesive strips on the underside of the patch. On most patches, all four edges have adhesive.

4. Apply the patch to your skin and hold it in place for at least 30 seconds with the palm of your hand. Run your finger along all four edges of the patch. Apply a moderate amount of pressure in order to make the patch come in contact with the skin as much as possible. Wash your hands after touching the patch.

5. Cut four pieces of medical tape to a length that is slightly longer than the edges of the patch. Put a piece of the tape along each edge for extra adhesion. Do not put tape over the center of the patch as this could cause the medicine to release faster than is intended.
