Does Smoking Cause Under Eye Circles Underneath The Eyes

Causes

There are a number of possible causes for dark circles. Among them are hereditary traits, stress, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep and even allergies. (The constant sneezing can burst tiny blood vessels under the eyes.) Another reason for dark circles is smoking.

Damaged Skin

Smoking can damage skin and make it appear more aged than it is. Specifically, it breaks down the collagen in skin, which reduces elasticity. This happens with the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), which smoking encourages.

Nicotine

The nicotine in cigarettes also has an effect on skin. It constricts blood vessels, resulting in poor circulation, which enhances the appearance of dark circles. Nicotine constricts blood vessels by increasing the level of vasopressin, which is a kind of protein.

Prevention/Solution

Quitting smoking is key to many health benefits, including reducing dark circles under your eyes. In addition to quitting smoking, try placing a slice of cucumber on your eyelids for about 10 minutes. Drinking plenty of water, eating fruits and vegetables and getting adequate sleep will also help the skin under your eyes.
