Bad Results Of Coke & Sodas

This glass of soda is harmful to your health.

Soft drinks like Coca-Cola and Pepsi are widely available in the United States, from restaurants to convenience stores to vending machines. Some people drink multiple cans or bottles each day. However, soft drinks like Coke do have ill effects on your body. People who drink soda regularly not only gain weight, but also are more susceptible to numerous health problems that wouldn't be an issue if they avoided soda altogether. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Weight Gain

Soft drinks like Coca-Cola are loaded with sugar. According to the Mayo Clinic, a 12 ounce can of soda typically has nine teaspoons of sugar. Since some people drink more than one can per day, the intake of all these teaspoons of sugar can lead to obesity. According to Organic Consumers, each can of soda consumed increases the risk of obesity 1.6 times.

Metabolic Syndrome

People who drink more than one can of soda per day also run a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a group of conditions like high blood pressure, insulin resistance (which leads to diabetes) and increase in blood cholesterol level, according to the Mayo Clinic. By adding such a large infusion of sugar, the levels in your blood get so high it is difficult for your body to modulate it.

Bones and Teeth

Excessive soft drink consumption is also hazardous for your bones and teeth. Sodas contain caffeine and phosphoric acid, both of which suck calcium from your bones. Without this essential calcium, you become more susceptible to osteoporosis, a condition where your bones become brittle and break more easily. Also, constant exposure to the high levels of sugar found in soda eats away at the protective enamel on your teeth.

Caffeine

Much in the way of other substances like nicotine, people can become addicted to the caffeine found in Coke and other soft drinks. This addiction fuels the need to drink soft drinks throughout the day. Caffeine-withdrawal symptoms can be quite serious as well. Some people experience flu-like symptoms while others suffer from nausea or headaches. Also, according to Water for Life, caffeine decreases fertility and the chances of conception.
