An electronic cigarette, also known as an e-cig, is a handheld vaporizer device for nicotine. It does not require a lighter and does not produce smoke, rather a battery operated system within this cigarette looking structure creates a vapor from e-liquid (liquid nicotine).
Cartridge
Unlike a real cigarette, the e-cig does not have nicotine in the white part, rather the nicotine is in cartridges that go where the filter usually is. The cartridge contains the e-liquid and this is what determines the nicotine content of the e-cig.
Varieties
The e-cig cartridge comes in many different forms and flavors and the nicotine values vary. The liquid nicotine is usually mixed with another type of liquid,sometimes propylene glycol , to make a solution and the composition helps determine the nicotine content.
Nicotine Content
The nicotine content depends on what the package states, with the usual labeling ranging from none to extra high, while the range varies from companies the following numbers are in the right range---0 mg for none, 6 mg for low, 11 mg for medium, 16 mg for high, and 20 mg for extra high.
Cigarettes vs. E-cigarettes
An average smoker takes about 15 puffs on a cigarette, which ranges from 1 to 2 mg of nicotine consumption per cigarette. Comparatively, 15 puffs on a 16 mg cartridge would equal about 0.15 mg of nicotine. Thus, the nicotine absorption is far less in an e-cigarette than a regular cigarette.
Health and Dangers
Because of the lack of smoke, e-cigarettes are considered healthier for you, however, you still will be taking in nicotine, which is not good for your body. Furthermore, the e-liquid that the cartridges are filled with are poisonous if spilled on someone because of the large nicotine content in them, so you should take precautions.
