How Lengthy Is Darvocet In Your Body

Composed of propoxyphene and acetaminophen (Tylenol), Darvocet is a medication commonly used to reduce pain. It is manufactured in 325mg and 650mg tablets, which are taken by mouth. Because it is no longer under patent, generic versions are available.

Prescription Medication

Based on two pain-relief medications for mild to moderate pain, Darvocet is a prescription medication. The mechanism by which this medication works in the body is not fully understood. Since Darvocet is an opiate narcotic, it can be habit-forming if taken in large doses over time. Physicians prescribe Darvocet because it's easy to take and works well to relieve pain in most people. The usual dose is one to two tablets every four hours.

Acetaminophen is a non-narcotic pain-reliever that also reduces fever. Combined, the two medicines are more effective than either alone.

When Not Advisable

Darvocet is not the medication of choice for people with severe allergies or sleep problems, or who are on other pain medicines. Alcoholic beverages taken while using Darvocet can cause liver damage. Taken with anti-depressant drugs and tranquilizers, it can be dangerous. An FDA panel warned that this drug has caused deaths and its use needs careful consideration.

Side Effects

Although side-effects are usually mild, several have been noted. Among the more common are nausea, mild stomach pain, dry mouth and constipation. Use sometimes results in headache or light-headedness. Less common are shallow breathing, hives and itching, mental confusion and blurred vision.

Among the elderly, Darvocet may have a sedative effect.

Metabolism

The liver metabolizes Darvocet. That is, the liver clears the body of this drug. Depending on a person's metabolism, about 12 hours from when it is taken, half the medication will be gone. Usually, it will be completely metabolized in 24 hours. However, the liver makes a byproduct, norpropoxyphene, in the clearing process. This byproduct has a half-life of 36 hours, meaning that it takes about three days for the body to be completely clear of the drug.

Drug Testing

Standard urine drug testing will classify Darvocet as an opiate such as methadone or heroin. If test results are important, wait at least 72 hours after the last dose of the medicine was taken. Or bring a prescription to indicate what you are taking and that it is not an illegal drug.
