Get Cigarette Smell From Toys

Remove the cigarette smell from stuffed animals before your child snuggles with it.

Buying toys at a yard sale or the local thrift store is an excellent way to save money. Used toys, though, can come with some negatives-- one being they may smell from cigarette smoke. Toys that were gifts from smokers may also smell like smoke. Before banning the toys from your home because you can't stand the smell or worry they are not safe for your child, try a few different techniques to remove the cigarette smell.

Instructions

1. Wash stuffed animals and other washable toys in the washing machine on the gentle cycle. Wash like colors together in cold water and air dry them outdoors, if possible. Repeat if the smell remains.

2. Clean other toys, such as a plastic playhouse and little plastic cars, using a bleach-water solution of 1 tablespoon of bleach and 1 gallon of warm water. Spray the toys with the bleach-water solution and let it sit for two or three minutes so the bleach gets rid of any lingering cigarette smells. Rinse the toys with a wet rag, then dry with a clean towel.

3. Wash other toys, such as soft dolls or electronic toys, carefully with a damp, soapy rag. It should be wrung out so no water is dripping. Wipe down the surfaces to get any old smoke residue off. Rinse the toys with a clean, damp towel or rag.

4. Put toys that still smell of cigarettes in a plastic container and place an open box of baking soda in it. Seal the lid and leave it for three or four days. According to a University of Kentucky paper, you can also use a two or three fabric softener sheets to help get rid of the smell.
