What's The Most secure Whitener For Teeth

The safest whitener for teeth is any toothpaste approved by the American Dental Association, used at least twice a day. Along with daily flossing, and regular professional cleanings by a dentist or hygienist, these are the most effective ways to whiten teeth. For a bit more high-powered results, however, people can turn to a couple of different commercial products as well as one common household item.

Significance

A 2006 Consumer Reports study found only one whitening toothpaste to have any significant benefits over regular toothpaste, and that was Ultra Brite Advanced Whitening toothpaste, made by Colgate. The results were not dramatic, but showed at least some extra whitening over the 40 other brands tested. Ultra Brite contains fluoride but does not have the ADA seal of approval for cavity prevention. For users preferring a product with ADA approval, Consumer Reports found the best all-around toothpaste to be Colgate Total.

Benefits

Brushing at least twice a day, particularly after consuming stain-producing foods such as tea, coffee, colas, red wine, or dark berries, is the safest and best teeth whitener available. Regular brushing also prevents the build-up of plaque, the sticky material which can harden into yellowish tartar. Flossing prevents tartar as well, because it removes food residue that brushing can't reach.

Potential

A common ingredient in commercial whitening agents, as well as in the cleansers dentists and hygienists use, is carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. Any over-the-counter whitening strips and gels which have one of these ingredients as the bleaching agent are considered safe. People can also purchase a 3-percent hydrogen peroxide solution in drugstores or discount stores, which can be safely used as a teeth-whitening mouthwash, as long as the person doesn't swallow any. A few drops of hydrogen peroxide can be added to a half-teaspoon of baking soda mixed with a little water, to form a paste that will whiten teeth. This should not be used more than once a week because baking soda can be hard on tooth enamel.

Warning

Whitening strips and tray-based gel systems can work better than mouthwash and peroxide-based toothpaste because they keep the solution on teeth for a longer period of time. However, they also can cause temporary gum irritation and sensitive teeth in some people, and if any solution is swallowed, it also can cause a sore throat.

One homemade whitener which works but which dentists advise to avoid is lemon juice, because its acidic character can damage tooth enamel.

Features

A teaspoon of white apple cider vinegar added to a glass of water for a mouthwash can provide some subtle whitening effects. In addition, if a person prefers not to use hydrogen peroxide, the baking soda paste can also provide whitening even without the peroxide. Both these solutions should be used no more than once a week to avoid damage to tooth enamel.
