Remove Nicotine From Whitened Wood Furniture

Nicotine is the drug in cigarettes that make them addicitive.

Nicotine residue and stains are an unfortunate side effect of cigarette smoke. When the smoke comes in contact with the white wood furniture, it will leave a smelly and oily discoloration on the furniture. Commercial all-purpose cleaners do little to remove the nicotine and can cause more harm than good. Instead, use a few natural and inexpensive liquids that will cut through the nicotine residue, remove cigarette smoke odors and restore the look of the white wood furniture.

Instructions

1. Place the wood furniture on top of a plastic drop cloth. This will protect the floor from the cleaning solution.

2. Scrub the white wood with a sponge saturated in white vinegar to remove the nicotine. Rinse the sponge with running water when soiled, saturate with white vinegar and continue scrubbing until you have removed the nicotine. Continue to the next step if the nicotine stain remains.

3. Ventilate the working area by opening windows. Put on rubber gloves to protect your skin for irritation caused by the cleaning solution.

4. Add 1 cup of clear, non-sudsy ammonia to 1 gallon of water. The colder the water, the less fumes the ammonia will produce.

5. Moisten a rag in the ammonia mixture, and scrub the white wood furniture starting at the top and working down. Continue in this manner until you have removed the nicotine.

6. Wipe the ammonia mixture off the white wood with a cloth moistened with cold water, and dry with a lint-free towel.
