Ambien Detox

Too many pills!

Sleep is so important to us that we will do just about anything to get a night of restful, restorative sleep. For those who suffer from sleep disorders, resorting to prescription sleep medications may be needed in order to get some rest. Unfortunately, most prescription sleep aids are not meant to be used long term; but doctor's will prescribe them and patients will take them because of the importance of sleep.

Hooked?

How do you know when to say no to Ambien? It works for most people, but after a while a person comes to rely on it totally. Ambien does a good job at putting a person to sleep, and if it doesn't keep you sleeping though the night, there's an Ambien for that--Ambien CR. Unfortunately for many people, Ambien can stop working as well, or other problems, like hallucinations, can occur. For any number of reasons, if a person decides to stop taking Ambien, there is a process to get it out of their system.

Talk to Your Doctor

Only you and your doctor can decide what you will try for sleep when you stop taking Ambien. There are other medications available, some "off-label" (which means that sleepiness is a desireable side effect of a drug) that could be helpful, like a muscle relaxant. It is always a good idea to discuss a decision as important as your sleep with your doctor before trying to stop Ambien on your own.

Getting Ambien Out of Your System

Ambien is a potent hypnotic drug that doesn't immediately leave your system once you stop taking it. If you have taken it for a long time, the chemicals may have built up in your system, causing unusual daytime behavior and thoughts. You quite possibly may need professional help at a detox facility. Your physician would be able to guide you through the process of finding a treatment center near you.

If you have not been on Ambien for a long time, it may only take a few days to get it out of your system simply by not taking any more. A few suggestions for help through this time would be to get some exercise so that you are more tired when you go to bed, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and take a multi-vitamin and omega-3 supplement, which supports healthy brain activity.
