Are Electric Cigarettes Safe

Electronic cigarettes
are not a safe alternative to smoking.

Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, carry the same risks as traditional cigarettes because they contain nicotine and other chemicals, and may be even more dangerous because people smoke them believing they are safe, so they smoke more.

Electronic Cigarettes and Nicotine

Because e-cigarettes contain nicotine, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is concerned that people may switch to them believing they are safer than regular cigarettes.

E-cigarettes may also contain other chemicals that are known irritants, including propylene glycol. The exact amount of nicotine and other chemicals is not known because these products have neither been tested nor approved by the FDA.

Electronic Cigarettes and Young People

E-cigarettes are sometimes sold in flavors, such as chocolate and mint, and the FDA is concerned that young people may smoke them thinking they will not become addicted. Because these products do contain nicotine, there is a risk that young people will become addicted and then move on to regular cigarettes

Marketing of Electronic Cigarettes

E-cigarettes are marketed in a way that is misleading. They are sometimes sold as a way to quit smoking, but unlike other smoking cessation methods, the nicotine is inhaled quickly from an e-cigarette, which means that smokers still get the "nicotine high" that can perpetuate the addiction.
